The author considers the \(L^2\)-norm of the maximal operator associated to a polynomial curve \(t \mapsto (\gamma_1t,\dots,\gamma_dt^d)\), i.e. \[ \mathcal{M} (f)(x) = \sup_{r>0} \frac{1}{2r} \int_{|t| \leq r} |f(x_1-\gamma_1t,\dots,x_d - \gamma_d t^d)| dt. \] The chief result of the paper establishes that there exists an absolute constant \(c>0\) such that \[ \| \mathcal{M} (f) \|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)} \leq c \log d \| f \|_{L^2(\mathbb{R}^d)}. \] The proof of this interesting result is obtained by relating the maximal function to a suitable semigroup of operators and applying Stein's general maximal theorem for symmetric diffusion semigroups.
