The authors discuss the scattering problem for the two-dimensional Helmholtz equation for the scattered field in the exterior of a smooth scatterer. The Dirichlet boundary condition corresponds to a perfectly reflecting object. The mathematical problem can be recast as an integral equation on the boundary of the scatterer. This is approximated by Filon-type quadrature, resulting in a higher-order ordinary differential equation on a finite interval. This approach is analyzed mathematically and illustrated numerically, where it is demonstrated that even simple finite difference schemes yield satisfactory results. Since the method incorporates asymptotic properties of the solution, it can attain particularly good results for highly oscillatory solutions.
