Let \(F_0\) be a nonarchimedean local field of characteristic zero and odd residue characteristic. Let \(U(1,1)\) denote the quasisplit unitary group over \(F_0\) defined with respect to a quadratic extension \(F/F_0\). This article gives an explicit description of the images of supercuspidal \(L\)-packets of \(U(1,1)(F_0)\) under the stable and labile base change liftings to \(\text{GL}(2,F)\) in terms of the theory of types due to \textit{C. J. Bushnell} and \textit{P. C. Kutzko} [The admissible dual of \(\text{GL}(N)\) via compact open subgroups. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press (1993; Zbl 0787.22016)]. It represents a complement to the author's paper [Can. J. Math. 60, No.~4, 790--821 (2008; Zbl 1158.22019)], in which the author gives an analogous description of the base change lifts of singleton supercuspidal \(L\)-packets of the unitary group \(U(2,1)(F_0)\) to \(\text{GL}(3,F)\). The non-singleton supercuspidal \(L\)-packets of \(U(2,1)(F_0)\) are transfers of \(L\)-packets of the endoscopic group \((U(1,1)\times U(1))(F_0)\). Thus, as shown by \textit{J. D. Rogawski} [Automorphic representations of unitary groups in three variables. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press (1990; Zbl 0724.11031)], describing the base change lifts of these \(L\)-packets reduces to the analogous problem for \(U(1,1)(F_0)\). The paper under review gives an explicit description of the supercuspidal \(L\)-packets of \(U(1,1)(F_0)\) in terms of their types using results from a previous paper [Manuscr.~Math.~107, No.~2, 151--186 (2002; Zbl 1108.22011)] of the author. As shown by Rogawski, the packets of size 2 are endoscopic, arising from the transfer from the group \((U(1)\times U(1))(F_0)\). Using an endoscopic character identity and methods due to Flicker, the author determines the character of \((U(1)\times U(1))(F_0)\) that transfers to a given packet in terms of the inducing data of the representations in the packet. The stable base change lift is then given in terms of this character due to a result of Rogawski. The remaining supercuspidal packets are singletons. In this case, the author determines all irreducible supercuspidal representations of \(\text{GL}(2,F)\) that are invariant under the involution associated to \(U(1,1)\) and have central character trivial on \(F_0^\times\). Rogawski has determined that such representations comprise the stable and labile base change lifts of the singleton supercuspidal \(L\)-packets of \(U(1,1)(F_0)\). The paper characterizes those that are in the image of the stable lifting and then explicitly determines the \(L\)-packet of \(U(1,1)(F_0)\) to which such a representation corresponds by verifying a Shintani character identity. (The labile lifting is a twist of the stable by a character, so this essentially handles the labile case as well.) This is accomplished using a lemma that relates character values on certain finite groups with those of certain \(p\)-subgroups. This result should be of use in calculations similar to those in this paper in more general settings.
