Suppose that \(G\) is a group of type \(U(2,1)\) defined over a local field of characteristic zero and with odd residual characteristic. Then the base-change lift exists for quadratic extensions \(E/F\). Suppose that the residual characteristic of \(F\) is \(\geq 59\). Then the authors show that if \(\Pi\) is a depth-zero \(A\)-packet for \(G/F\) and if \(\pi\) is a member of \(\Pi\) then the lift of \(\pi\) reflects precisely a lift at the level of the parahoric groups over finite fields. This is a significant step in clarifying the behaviour of the lift in terms of the Langlands classification. Added on 2007-11-01: a correct printing of Figure 1 is given in the erratum.
