The tropical variety of a graded ideal in the ring of polynomials of \(n\) complex variables is a certain refinement of the notion of the Gröbner fan (see e.g. [\textit{A. Dickenstein}, \textit{E. M. Feichtner} and \textit{B. Sturmfels}, J. Am. Math. Soc. 20, No. 4, 1111--1133 (2007; Zbl 1166.14033)], or [\textit{B. Ya. Kazarnovskij}, Izv. Math. 63, No. 3, 535--547 (1999; Zbl 0936.14037)]). The tropical variety of an ideal is not preserved under linear changes of variables, however, ``almost all'' linear changes of variables send it to the same tropical variety. The latter is called the generic tropical variety of the ideal, and was introduced by the authors in an earlier paper [\textit{T. Römer} and \textit{K. Schmitz}, \url{arXiv:0904.0120}]. In the present paper, the authors study basic invariants and properties of a graded ideal (depth, Cohen-Macaulayness, multiplicity) in terms of its generic tropical variety.
