The authors present general results for L-infinity stability for scalar hyperbolic equations where two fundamental properties are introduced: the convexity property and the sign inversion property. The results are given for schemes based on a Euler forward discretization in time but all the results hold if one only considers the semi-discrete approximation in space. The authors prove that the two properties are satisfied by a large class of monotone upwind schemes for conservation laws (MUSCL) methods: the monoslope (classical) MUSCL and the multislope MUSCL methods. The new MUSCL method named multislope method consists in using a specific scalar slope for each interface which corresponds to an approximation of the directional derivative instead of an approximation of the gradient. A section is devoted to the numerical tests where the multislope MUSCL technique is compared to the classical monoslope one and they give some conclusions.
