If \(A\) is a Poisson-Lie group and \(T\) a Lie subgroup then, following Drinfeld, the quotient \(A/T\) is said to be a Poisson homogeneous space if it is a homogeneous space equipped with a Poisson structure such that the action map \(A \times A/T \to A/T\) is a morphism of Poisson manifolds. If \(A/T\) has a Poisson structure such that the natural projection \(A \to A/T\) is a morphism of Poisson manifolds, then \(A/T\) is a Poisson homogeneous space and is said to be of group type. If \(A\) and \(T\) are connected, this is equivalent to the Lie algebra of \(T\) being a coideal of the Lie algebra of \(A\) with respect to the cobracket coming from the Poisson structure on \(A\). The present work studies Poisson non-compact symmetric spaces, that is when \(A\) is a non-compact absolutely simple real Lie group with finite centre and with Poisson structure corresponding to an almost factorizable Lie bialgebra structure \(\delta\), and when \(T\) is a maximal compact subgroup of \(A\). The main result of the paper shows that if \(T\) is adapted to the cobracket \(\delta\) in a natural sense, then one may determine precisely when the resulting Poisson homogeneous space is of group type.
