The author proves that the Goodwillie tower of a weak equivalence preserving functor from simplicial sets to symmetric spectra can be understood by using the tower for stable mapping spaces (and thus, enriched derived coends play a role). This paper, which serves as a good illustration of the correspondence between differential geometry and Goodwillie's homotopy calculus, uses homotopical categories (not just model categories) and the framework of categories that are enriched over a monoidal category. One application of the author's results, the configuration space models of \textit{G. Arone} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 351, No.~3, 1123--1150 (1999; Zbl 0945.55011)], and other ingredients, is that the derivative of a finitary simplicial homotopy functor can be presented in terms of a classical expression.
