Let \(X\) and \(Y\) be two CW-complexes, \(Ph(X, Y)\) be the set of homotopy classes \([f]\) of phantom maps \(f: X \rightarrow Y\) and \(Ph^{n}(X,Y)\) be the subset of \(Ph(X,Y)\) of elements \([f]\) such that the Gray index \(G(f)\) of \(f\) is \(\geq n\), see [\textit{Lê Minh Hà}, Topology 44, No.~1, 217--229 (2005; Zbl 1064.55009)]. The main result of this paper is the construction of a counter example to the following Gray index conjecture: \(Ph^{\infty}(X,Y)=\ast\), for \(X\) (resp. \(Y\)) such that each of its integral homology groups (resp. homotopy) is finitely generated.
