The regularity of refinable functions with exponentially decaying masks is characterized via the spectral radius of the transfer operator associated with its mask. The characterization established in the paper extends some results of \textit{A. Cohen} et al. [Constructive Approximation 15, No. 2, 241--255 (1999; Zbl 0937.42017)], \textit{R.-Q. Jia} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 351, No. 10, 4089--4112 (1999; Zbl 1052.42029)], \textit{R.-Q. Jia} and \textit{Q. Jiang} [SIAM J. Matrix Anal. Appl. 24, No. 4, 1071--1109 (2003; Zbl 1032.42037)], where regularity of refinable functions with compact support are discussed.
