It is known that there is a close relationship between the Lie ring associated to the lower central series of a group and the graded ring associated to the filtration by the powers of the augmentation ideal on the group ring. In particular, after tensoring with the rationals, the latter becomes the universal enveloping algebra for the former. In the present paper, the authors prove an analogue of this statement for arbitrary loops. The role of the lower central series here is played by the dimension series which, unlike the lower central series, generalizes to loops in an obvious way. Instead of Lie algebras one has to consider Sabinin algebras [see \textit{J. M. Pérez-Izquierdo}, Adv. Math. 208, No. 2, 834-876 (2007; Zbl 1186.17003)], originally called hyperalgebras, which have been introduduced by \textit{P. O. Mikheev} and \textit{L. V. Sabinin} [see Sov. Math., Dokl. 36, 545-548 (1988); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 297, 801-804 (1987; Zbl 0659.53018)] as the tangent structures for local analytic loops. The main point of the proof consists of showing that a certain set of operations on a loop produces the primitive operations of \textit{I. P. Shestakov} and \textit{U. U. Umirbaev} [J. Algebra 250, No. 2, 533-548 (2002; Zbl 0993.17002)] in the same way as group commutators produce Lie algebra commutators. The paper has an appendix where it is shown how the usual lower central series for groups can be obtained by linearizing the operation of taking the square of an element of a group.
