The authors give a simple new constructive proof of a result of \textit{T. J. Laffey} [Electron. J. Linear Algebra 12, 73--76, electronic only (2004/2005; Zbl 1099.15007)], and also prove a related result. Both results are extensions of a previous result of the second author.
