Let \(\Omega \) be a bounded smooth domain in \(\mathbb R^N\), \(N\geq 2\). The aper concerns singular elliptic problems of the form \[ -\Delta u\pm p(d(x))g(u)=\lambda f(x,u)+\mu| \nabla u| ^a\quad\text{in }Omega,\qquad u=0\quad\text{on }\partial\Omega, \] where \(d(x)\) denotes the distance of \(x\) from \(\partial\Omega\), \(p(t)\) is a positive function possibly unbounded near \(t=0\), \(g(t)\) is a decreasing positive function unbounded near \(t=0\), \(\lambda\in \mathbb R^+\), \(\mu\in \mathbb R\), \(0<a\leq 2\), \(f(x,t)\) is positive and, for all \(x\in\Omega\), it is non decreasing with respect to \(t\). Various existence and non existence results are established. For example, in case \(\int_0^1p(t)g(t)\,dt=\infty\) and \(\mu\leq 0\) then problem \((P)^+\) has no classical solutions. In case \(\int_0^1p(t)g(t)\,dt<\infty\) and \(f(x,t)\) is sub-linear with respect to \(t\) then: (i) if \(\mu=-1\) there exists \(\lambda^*>0\) such that \((P)^+\) has at least one classical solution if \(\lambda>\lambda^*\) and no classical solutions if \(0<\lambda<\lambda^*;\) (ii) if \(\mu=1\), a result like the previous one is proved whenever \(0<a<1\). A similar non existence result is proved for \((P)^-\). Concerning existence for problem \((P)^-\), the authors prove the following result. If \(\lambda=1\), \(\int_0^1p(t)g(t)\,dt<\infty\) and \(f(x,t)\) is sublinear with respect to \(t\) then: (i) if \(0<a<1\), problem \((P)^-\) has at least one classical solution for all \(\mu\in \mathbb R\); (ii) if \(1<a\leq 2\), there exists \(\mu^*>0\) such that \((P)^-\) has at least one solution if \(\mu<\mu^*\) and no solution exists if \(\mu>\mu*.\) Finally, the case \(f(x,t)\) is linear with respect to \(t\) is discussed.
