The authors consider infinite first-order evolution systems in one space variable, of triangular form (so that each equation involves only finitely many unknowns). They seek to generalize the diagonalizability conditions for finite systems that follow from results of \textit{J. Haantjes} [Indag. Math. 17, 158--162 (1955; Zbl 0068.14903)], and \textit{S. P. Tsarev} [Izv. Akad. Nauk SSSR, Ser. Mat. 54, No. 5, 1048--1068 (1990; Zbl 0796.76014)]. The main result is the proof of the sufficiency of a condition of \textit{E. V. Ferapontov} and \textit{D. G. Marshall} [\url{arXiv:nlin.SI/05051013} (2005)]. The method relies on the introduction of a \((2+1)\) integral equation as in \textit{J. Gibbons}' paper [Physica D 3, No. 3, 503--511 (1981)].
