Let \(C\) be a smooth, irreducible, projective curve of genus \(g\) defined over \(\mathbb{C}\), with genus \(g \geq 4\). The Clifford index of \(C\) is the integer \(c:= \min \{ d - 2 h^0(D) + 2 \; ; \; D \text{\;a divisor such that } h^0(D) \geq 2 \text{\;and } \deg(D) < g \}\). A complete linear series \(g_d^r = | D | \) is said to compute the Clifford index \(c\) if \(d := \deg(d) < g\), \(r := h^{0}(D) - 1 \geq 1\) and \(d - 2 r = c\); in this case we get \(d \equiv c \; (\text{mod } 2)\) and \(d \geq c + 2\). Assume that \(c \geq 3\), \(r \geq 3\) and that \(g^r_d\) computes the Clifford index \(c\) of \(C\), then it is known that \(g^r_d\) is simple and base point free; denote by \(C'\) the image of the map from \(C\) to \(\mathbb{P}^r\) induced by \(g^r_d\). In the paper under review, among other results, the author proves the following. Theorem. Assume that \(c \geq 3\), \(d \leq 2 c + 3\), and that there exists a \(g^r_d\) computing the Clifford index, if \(r \geq 4\) then \(C'\) does not lie on a surface of degree at most \(2 r - 3\) in \(\mathbb{P}^r\), unless \((d,g) = (2 c + 4, 2 c + 5)\). Theorem. Let \(c \geq 0\) and \(g\) be integers such that \(2 c + 1 \leq g \leq 2 c + 4\). Then for any integer \(d < g\) such that \(d \equiv c \; (\text{mod } 2)\) and \(c + 2 \leq d < 2 (c + 2)\) there exists a curve \(C\) of genus \(g\) and Clifford index \(c\) with a linear series of degree \(d\) computing \(c\).
