LABYRINTH: A new ultra high speed stream cipher
To protect communications using very high speed systems, like ATM fibre networks, one has to cope with the problem that the conventional cryptosystems are unable to operate at very high data rates. To reflect the achievements in the field of high speed communication new ciphers need to be developed. The paper describes a new stream cipher with a potential to be used in a high speed networks for bulk traffic encryption. The cipher combines linear feedback shift registers, \(S\)-boxes from the DES and a key controlled hash function. The version described uses a 128-bit key, but authors note that 256-bit version is also available. Prototype implementation of the cipher using \textit{Field Programmable Gate Array} devices has shown the maximum usable throughput about 1.2 Gbps. The authors argue that extensive testing using the proprietary Motorola Cryptographic Test Suite has shown that the algorithm exhibits properties required for a good cipher. However, detailed security analysis is not given here and the authors invite readers to analyse their design. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0879.00078].
