Modular characters, Hall subgroups, and normal complements

From MaRDI portal

A question in finite group theory asks when a Hall subgroup \(H\) of a finite group \(G\) admits a normal complement. A classical result states that this happens if and only if all irreducible complex characters of \(H\) extend to \(G\), a fact proven by \textit{P. Ferguson} [J. Algebra 120, No. 1, 47--53 (1989; Zbl 0684.20008)] relying on the classification of finite simple groups.\N\NThe main result of the paper is Theorem A, which states that for any finite group \(G\), Hall subgroup \(H\) and prime \(p\) not dividing \(|H|\), the extension of all irreducible \(p\)-Brauer characters of \(H\) to \(G\) is equivalent to the existence of a normal complement for \(H\).
