Moduli of codimension two linear sections of subadjoint varieties

From MaRDI portal

Every object and map is understood to be over the complex numbers. Let \(G\) be a simple group of type \(F_4\), \(E_6\), \(E_7\) or \(E_8\). Consider the associated adjoint variety \(X\), which is defined as the unique closed \(G\) orbit (for the adjoint action) in the projective space of the Lie algebra of \(G\). The main object of study is the \textit{subadjoint variety} \(S\), defined as being the variety of lines (on the adjoint variety), passing through a fixed point \(x\). Let \(H\) be the semi-simple part of the isotropy subgroup at \(x\). Let \(W \subseteq T_xX\) be the contact hyperplane; then \(S\) is the unique closed orbit of the \(H\)-action on \(\mathbb PW\). The interest in understanding the geometry of subadjoint varieties is motivated by a conjecture by Lebrun and Salamon, which asserts that adjoint varieties are the only examples of Fano contact manifolds.\N\NThanks to Vinberg's theory of \(\theta\)-groups, the GIT quotient space of codimension-two linear sections of \(S\) identifies with the weighted projective space \(\mathbb{P}(1,3,4,6)\). The main goal of this paper is to investigate this isomorphism geometrically. A plane \(U\subset W\) is \textit{non-degenerate} if and only if \(S\) is non-singular at \(U\). Theorem 1.7 states that the non-degenerate planes form a principal open subset \(\mathcal U\), whose complement is the zero-locus of a fixed hypersurface of degree 12.\N\NMoreover, let \(M_G\) be its GIT quotient (with respect to the action of \(H\), and analogously let \(M\) be the GIT quotient of \(M_{D_4}\) by the symmetric group \(S_3\). The main result of this paper, as a consequence of Theorem 1.7, is that there is a natural morphism from \(\mathcal U\) into \(M\), whose induced map in the quotient gives an isomorphism \(M_G \simeq M\). The construction is uniform, and it uses the following fact (Theorem 1.7(2)): as \(U\) varies in \(\mathcal U\), there is an induced family of polarized curves of genus one. This allows the author to employ a correspondence of Barghava and Ho, relating the original moduli problem to one concerning curves of genus one.
