Multifractality

From MaRDI portal

Multifractality is a property of probability measures defined upon a fractal support to have a scaling of its moments, with the scaling exponents of different moments being nontrivially related. The author explains this notion on an elementary example of two-scale Cantor set and on a central physical example of a diffusion-limited growth of clusters. He describes scaling properties of the growth probability measure defined upon a surface of growing cluster by means of two scaling exponents -- the moment scaling function and the local density scaling function -- and then studies them carefully. In particular, the author proves a relation between these scaling functions in terms of the Legendre transform, presents results of various scholars on numerical simulations, considers different limiting cases, and gives their interpretation. These scaling functions appear to characterize not only scaling properties of moments but also that of correlation functions in a manner analogous to field theory (the operator product expansion). For the entire collection see [Zbl 0974.00042].
