Multiparameter maximal averages

From MaRDI portal

As to the maximal operator \({\mathcal M}_\sigma\), associated to a compactly supported Borel measure \(\sigma\) on \(\mathbb{R}^n\times \mathbb{R}^m\), given by the formula \[ {\mathcal M}_\sigma f(x,y)= \sup_{s,t> 0} \Biggl| \int_S f(x- sw,y- tz)d\sigma(w, z)\Biggr|, \] it is established that \[ \|{\mathcal M}_\sigma f\|_p\leq A_p\| f\|_p\quad\text{for}\quad p>1+ (2\min(a,b))^{-1} \] under the decay hypothesis \[ |\widehat\sigma(\xi, \eta)|\leq C|\xi|^{-a}|\eta|^{-b}\quad\text{for some}\quad a,b>1/2. \] Extensions to the cases of higher number of parameters are included and our results are shown to be sharp. In addition, a generalization of the strong maximal theorem is obtained.
