New developments in the representation theory of finite groups

This survey gives an account of the recent proofs of the McKay conjecture and Brauer's height zero conjecture, together with the necessary background from ordinary and modular character theory. For a finite group \(G\), a prime \(p\) and a Sylow \(p\)-subgroup \(P\) of \(G\), the McKay conjecture asserts that\N\[\N|\mathrm{Irr}_{p'}(G)|=|\mathrm{Irr}_{p'}(N_G(P))|,\N\]\Nwhere \(\mathrm{Irr}_{p'}(G)\) denotes the set of irreducible complex characters of \(G\) whose degrees are not divisible by \(p\). Brauer's height zero conjecture states that a defect group \(D\) of a \(p\)-block \(B\) is abelian if and only if every character in \(\mathrm{Irr}(B)\) has height zero.\N\NThe discussion of the McKay conjecture follows its reduction to the inductive McKay condition for non-abelian finite simple groups and the subsequent verification of this condition. For groups of Lie type in non-defining characteristic, the principal tools include Sylow \(d\)-tori, \(d\)-Harish-Chandra theory and the analysis of automorphisms and character extensions. The remaining technically difficult case, concerning groups of type \(D_n\), was completed by \textit{M. Cabanes} and \textit{B. Späth} [Ann. Math. (2) 203, No. 3, 933--1032 (2026; Zbl 08212930)], yielding the McKay conjecture for all finite groups and all primes.\N\NThe treatment of Brauer's height zero conjecture separates its two implications. The implication from abelian defect groups to height zero is obtained through a reduction to blocks of quasi-simple groups and detailed results on their block structure. For the converse implication, the proof for the prime \(2\) follows from the inductive Alperin-McKay condition, whereas the proof for odd primes uses a different argument based on the structure of a minimal counterexample and character-theoretic results for quasi-simple groups. The final part discusses related open problems, including the Alperin weight conjecture, Dade's conjecture, the Alperin-McKay conjecture and Brauer's \(k(B)\)-conjecture. It also records the dependence of the known proofs on the classification of finite simple groups and the question of finding classification-independent explanations for these global-local phenomena.
