On LCA groups with local ring of continuous endomorphisms

From MaRDI portal

A ring is called local, if it satisfies one of the many equivalent conditions, for example, if this ring has unique maximal right ideal.\N\NThe main task of this paper is to determine all locally compact abelian groups \(X\) whose ring \(E(X)\) of all continuous endomorphisms is local.\N\NA discrete valuation domain is a local, principal ideal, commutative domain.\N\NA locally compact abelian group \(X\) is said to be topologically indecomposable, if it cannot be written in the form \(X = A\oplus B\), where \(A\) and \(B\) are non-zero closed subgroups of \(X\).\N\NA locally compact abelian group \(X\) is said to have the finite exchange property within the class \(\mathcal L\) of all locally compact abelian groups, if \(X\) satisfies the following condition:\N\NFor any group \(Y\in{\mathcal L}\) and any its pair of topological direct sum decompositions \(Y=X'\oplus G=Y_1\oplus\dots\oplus Y_n,\) where \(G, Y_1, \ldots , Y_n\in {\mathcal L}, n\in{\mathbb Z}^+\), and \(X'\cong X\), there exist closed subgroups \(Y^{'}_i\) and \(Z_i\) of \(Y_i\) such that \(Y_i = Y^{'}_i\oplus Z_i\) for all \(i\in\{1, \dots, n\}\), and \(Y = X'\oplus Y^{'}_1 \oplus\dots\oplus Y^{'}_n\).\N\NUsing results from earlier authors, the author of the present paper obtains new lemmas, which help him to find some sufficient conditions for \(X\) under which\N\N1) the endomorphism ring \(E(X)\) is local if and only if \(E(X)\) is a discrete valuation domain;\N\N2) the endomorphism ring \(E(X)\) is local if and only if \(X\) is topologically indecomposable and has the finite exchange property within the class of all locally compact abelian groups.
