On some problems of weighted polynomial approximation and interpolation

From MaRDI portal

For non-symmetric weight-functions of the form \(w(x)=e^{-Q(x)}\) having finitely many zeros on the real line, the author considers the best weighted polynomial approximation \(E_n(f)_w=\inf_{p\in\Pi_n}\{\|w(f-p)\|\}\), where \(\|\cdot\|\) is the supremum norm, and \(\Pi_n\) is the set of polynomials of degree at most \(n\), and states density theorems in corresponding spaces of piecewise continuous (unbounded) functions. Also, he constructs systems of nodes of interpolation, where the weighted Lebesgue constant is of optimal order. For non-symmetric generalized Jacobi weights of the form \[ w(x)=(1-x)^{\alpha}(1+x)^{\beta} \prod_{i=1}^{s}v_{\alpha_i,\beta_i}(x-t_i),\qquad v_{\alpha,\beta}(x) =\{(-x)^{\alpha},\;x \leq 0, \;x^\beta,x \geq 0,\}. \] the Jackson type inequality is proved between the weighted best approximation and the Ditzian-Totik modulus of continuity. The Bernstein-Markov type inequality is established for \(v_{\alpha, \beta}\)-weights between norms of a polynomial and its first derivative.
