On the Fitting height of factorised soluble groups.

Abstract: In this paper we are concerned with finite soluble groups G admitting a factorisation G=AB, with A and B proper subgroups having coprime order. We are interested in bounding the Fitting height of G in terms of some group-invariants of A and B: including the Fitting heights and the derived lengths.

This paper deals with finite soluble groups \(G\) admitting a factorisation \(G=AB\), with \(A\) and \(B\) proper subgroups having coprime order. The main goal is to obtain bounds of the Fitting height of \(G\) in terms of some group-invariants of \(A\) and \(B\), including the Fitting heights and the derived lengths. For a finite soluble group \(X\), the Fitting series of \(X\) is defined inductively by \(F_0(X)=1\) and \(F_{i+1}(X)/F_i(X)=F(X/F_i)\), for every \(i\geq 0\), \(F(X)\) being the Fitting subgroup of \(X\), and the minimum natural number \(h\) with \(F_h(X)=X\) is called the Fitting height of \(X\), and is denoted by \(h(X)\). Also, \(d(X)\) denotes the derived length of \(X\), and \(\delta(X)\) is the maximal derived length of the Sylow subgroups of \(X\). The main results of the paper are the following: Theorem 1.1. Let \(G\) be a finite soluble group factorised by its proper subgroups \(A\) and \(B\) with \(\gcd(|A|,|B|)=1\). Then \(h(G)\leq h(A)+h(B)+4d(B)-1\). Moreover, if \(|B|\) is odd, then \(h(G)\leq h(A)+h(B)+2d(B)-1\), and, if \(B\) is nilpotent, then \(h(G)\leq h(A)+2d(B)\). (The authors conjecture that the hypothesis of \(|B|\) being odd can be avoided in the previous result.) Theorem 1.2. Let \(G\) be a finite soluble group factorised by its proper subgroups \(A\) and \(B\) with \(\gcd(|A|,|B|)=1\). Then \(h(G)\leq h(A)+(2\delta(B)+1)h(B)-1\). Theorem 1.4. Let \(G\) be a finite soluble group factorised by its proper subgroups \(A\) and \(B\) with \(\gcd(|A|,|B|)=1\). Then \(h(G)\leq h(A)\delta(A)+h(B)\delta(B)\).
