Optimization problems in population dynamics

From MaRDI portal

The authors consider initial value problems for autonomous differential equations with fixed moments in the form \[ {{dx}\over{dt}}=f(x),\;\quad t \neq \tau_i,\;\quad i=1, 2,\dots ,n ; \] \[ x( \tau_i+0) - x(\tau_i) = -I_i;\qquad x(0) = x_0. \] The following problem is solved: Determine the number of impulsive moments \(n\); the quantities of impulsive subtracting \(I_1,I_2, \dots I_n\); the impulsive moments \(0<\tau_1< \tau_2< \dots < \tau_n\) so that \(I_0 \leq I_i \leq I, i=1,2, \dots ,n\), where \(I_0\), \(I\) are positive constants and with \(I_1+I_2+ \dots +I_n=I\); in the moment \(T>0\) the solution to the initial value problem is maximal. It is known that if \(f(x)={{r}\over{K}}x(K-x)\) there is an impulsive analogue to the Verhulst equation, if \(f(x)=x(r-\gamma \cdot \ln x)\) the Gompertz model is obtained. The results are applied to Verhulst and Gompertz models of population dynamics.
