Perfect kernel and dynamics: from Bass-Serre theory to hyperbolic groups

From MaRDI portal

Let \(G\) be a non-elementary hyperbolic group. Define \(\operatorname{Sub}(G)\) (resp., \(\operatorname{Sub}_{[\infty]}(G)\)) as the set of all subgroups (resp., of all subgroups of infinite index) of \(G\) endowed with the Chabauty topology, and denote by~\(\mathcal K(G)\) the maximal perfect subspace of \(\operatorname{Sub}(G)\). The first main theorem (Theorem~A) of the paper shows that \[\overline{\operatorname{Sub}_{\operatorname{QC}[\infty]}(G)}\subseteq\mathcal K(G),\] where \({\operatorname{Sub}_{\operatorname{QC}[\infty]}(G)}\) is the set of all quasiconvex subgroups of \(G\) with infinite index. As a consequence, if \(G\) is also locally quasiconvex, then (Corollary B) \[\mathcal K(G)=\operatorname{Sub}_{[\infty]}(G)= \overline{\operatorname{Sub}_{\operatorname{QC}[\infty]}(G)}.\]\N\NThe other main results of the paper deal with similar problems in the following cases: a closed hyperbolic~\(3\)-manifold group (Theorem C), a finitely generated \textit{subgroup separable} (that is, every finitely generated subgroup can be expressed as an intersection of finite index subgroups) group (Theorem D), and a finitely generated group non-trivially acting on a tree with finite edge stabilizers (Theorem F). As a by-product, one has that if a group \(X\) acts topologically transitive on \(\operatorname{Sub}_{[\infty]}(X)\) and admits an amenable action with only infinite orbits, then \(X\) admits a faithful transitive and amenable action (Corollary I).
