Abstract: The Weil Conjectures are applied to the Hessenberg Varieties to obtain interesting information about the combinatorics of descents in the symmetric group. Combining this with elementary linear algebra leads to elegant proofs of some identities from the theory of descents.
The paper applies the Weil conjectures (now theorems) to the Hessenberg varieties to obtain combinatorial information about descents of permutations over the symmetric group. Elegant proofs to identities involving Eulerian polynomials are obtained.
