Abstract: We show that $Gamma<extbfSU(3,1)$ is a non-elementary complex hyperbolic Kleinian group in which $tr(gamma)inR$ for all $gammainGamma$ if and only if $Gamma$ is conjugate to a subgroup of $extbfSO(3,1)$ or $extbfSU(1,1)imesextbfSU(2)$.
