Abstract: The index of a Riemannian symmetric space is the minimal codimension of a proper totally geodesic submanifold (Onishchik, 1980). There is a conjecture by the first two authors for how to calculate the index. In this paper we give an affirmative answer to this conjecture for the exceptional Riemannian symmetric spaces and for the classical symmetric spaces Sp(r,R)/U(r). Our methodology is new and based on the idea of using slice representations for studying totally geodesic submanifolds.

In this paper, the authors deduce a new method for the calculation of the index of classical symmetric spaces taking $r>5$ using slice representations that are similar to the developed by the first two authors [J. Differ. Geom. 104, No. 2, 187--217 (2016; Zbl 1356.53054)] for $r=3,4,5$. In view of these method the authors mentioned Theorem 3.1 that play an eminent role in GRW-spacetime. The work of this paper is new and meaningful but it is similar to [loc. cit.].
