Abstract: We study codensity monads T induced by (mostly small, mostly dense) full subcategories AsubsetK. These monads behave quite similarly, we show some connections with the Isbell duality, pro-finite objects and compact spaces. We prove that they are quite unlikely to be accessible. Finally, we introduce the notion of generically idempotent monad and comment its properties.

The author studies codensity monads on a category \(\mathcal K\) induced by its full subcategory \(\mathcal A\). These monads include idempotent monads but also the ultrafilter monad on sets, the double dualization monad on vector spaces, or the Giry monad on measurable spaces. The paper relates these monads to the Isbell duality, to profinite objects, and explains why they are rarely accessible.
