Abstract: For a finite group G, let Hg,G,xi be the stack of admissible G-covers CoD of stable curves with ramification data xi, g(C)=g and g(D)=g′. There are source and target morphisms phicolonHg,G,xioMg,r and deltacolonHg,G,xioMg′,b, remembering the curves C and D together with the ramification or branch points of the cover respectively. In this paper we study admissible cover cycles, i.e. cycles of the form phi∗[Hg,G,xi]. Examples include the fundamental classes of the loci of hyperelliptic or bielliptic curves C with marked ramification points. The two main results of this paper are as follows: Firstly, for the gluing morphism xiAcolonMAoMg,r associated to to a stable graph A we give a combinatorial formula for the pullback xiA∗phi∗[Hg,G,xi] in terms of spaces of admissible G-covers and psi classes. This allows us to describe the intersection of the cycles phi∗[Hg,G,xi] with tautological classes. Secondly, the pull-push delta∗phi∗ sends tautological classes to tautological classes and we also give a combinatorial description of this map in terms of standard generators of the tautological rings. We show how to use the pullbacks to algorithmically compute tautological expressions for cycles of the form phi∗[Hg,G,xi]. In particular, we compute the classes [Hyp5] and [Hyp6] of the hyperelliptic loci in M5 and M6 and the class [B4] of the bielliptic locus in M4.

The moduli space of admissible \(G\)-covers admits a source morphism \(\phi\) and a target morphism \(\delta\) to the respective moduli spaces of curves. In this paper the authors study the behavior of tautological classes under pullback and pushforward maps associated to \(\phi\) and \(\delta\). In particular, they obtain a combinatorial formula for the cycle class of the locus of admissible \(G\)-covers restricted to the boundary strata of the source moduli space. Morover, they show that \(\delta_{*}\phi^{*}\) sends tautological classes to tautological classes and give an explicit combinatorial description of this map. As applications, they compute the cycle classes of the hyperelliptic loci in genus five and six as well as the cycle class of the bielliptic locus in genus four.
