Abstract: Let S be a closed and oriented surface of genus g at least 2. In this (mostly expository) article, the object of study is the space mathcalP(S) of marked isomorphism classes of projective structures on S. We show that mathcalP(S), endowed with the canonical complex structure, carries exotic hermitian structures that extend the classical ones on the Teichm"uller space mathcalT(S) of S. We shall notice also that the Kobayashi and Carath'eodory pseudodistances, which can be defined for any complex manifold, can not be upgraded to a distance. We finally show that mathcalP(S) does not carry any Bergman pseudometric.

Let \(S\) be a closed and oriented surface of genus \(g\geq 2\). This article provides a pleasant exposition of the complex geometry of the space \(\mathcal{P}(S)\) of marked complex projective structures on \(S\). The space \(\mathcal{P}(S)\) forms an affine bundle over the Teichmüller space \(\mathcal{T}(S)\), where the fiber over any point \(X \in \mathcal{T}(S)\) can be identified with the vector space of holomorphic quadratic differentials on \(X\) via the Schwarzian parametrization. The article reviews the construction of the complex structure on \(\mathcal{T}(S)\) via the Bers embedding, and thus on \(\mathcal{P}(S)\); the latter is shown to be biholomorphic to the product space \(\mathcal{T}(S) \times \mathbb{C}^{3g-3}\), and also to the cotangent bundle \(T^\ast\mathcal{T}(S)\). As a corollary, the author deduces results about the degeneracy of the Kobayashi, Caratheodory and Bergman metrics on \(\mathcal{P}(S)\). Along the way, he introduces and discusses properties of these metrics and other Kähler metrics on \(\mathcal{T}(S)\), and various related notions like Steinness and pseudoconvexity. This makes the paper an interesting resource for anyone interested in these notions in the context of Teichnüller theory.
