Duals of quantum semigroups with involution

Abstract: We define a category $mathcalQSI$ of quantum semigroups with involution which carries a corepresentation-based duality map $MmapstowidehatM$. Objects in $mathcalQSI$ are von Neumann algebras with comultiplication and coinvolution, we do not suppose the existence of a Haar weight or of a distinguished spatial realisation. In the case of a locally compact quantum group $mathbbG$, the duality $;widehat;$ in $mathcalQSI$ recovers the universal duality of Kustermans: $widehat{L}^{i}nfty(mathbbG)=C_0^u(hatmathbbG{)}^{\ast \ast }=widehat{C}_0^u(mathbbG{)}^{\ast \ast }$, and $widehat{L}^{i}nfty(hatmathbbG)=C_0^u(mathbbG{)}^{\ast \ast }=widehat{C}_0^u(hatmathbbG{)}^{\ast \ast }$. Other various examples are given.
