Abstract: In this paper we show that, with respect to the L2 norm, three classes of functions in Hr(0,1), defined by certain boundary conditions, admit optimal spline spaces of all degrees geqr−1, and all these spline spaces have uniform knots.

Optimal spline spaces are spaces of piecewise univariate polynomials that approximate functions of a given smoothness in the Euclidean norm in the best possible way. This is in the sense that the Kolmogorov $L^2$ $n$-width is attained by the approximation from that subspace. In this paper, optimal spline spaces are given for univariate Sobolev spaces that are subspaces of square-integrable functions on a unit interval, satisfying boundary conditions of various kinds.
