Abstract: We show that an isometric action of a compact quantum group on the underlying geodesic metric space of a compact connected Riemannian manifold (M,g) with strictly negative curvature is automatically classical, in the sense that it factors through the action of the isometry group of (M,g). This partially answers a question by D. Goswami.

One of the main results of the paper under review states that an isometric action of a quantum group on the underlying geodesic metric space of a compact connected Riemannian manifold, which has finite orbits, factors through an action of an ordinary compact group. It is then shown that if the compact connected Riemannian manifold has strictly negative sectional curvature everywhere, then the finiteness condition on the orbits is automatically satisfied, and thus every such action factors through an action of an ordinary compact group. This fact has been conjectured to be true for arbitrary compact connected Riemannian manifolds by D. Goswami.
