Abstract: Given a complex quasiprojective curve and a non-isotrivial family of elliptic curves over , the -torsion yields a monodromy representation . We prove that if then and are isogenous, provided is larger than a constant depending only on the gonality of . This can be viewed as a function field analog of the Frey--Mazur conjecture, which states that an elliptic curve over is determined up to isogeny by its -torsion Galois representation for . The proof relies on hyperbolic geometry and is therefore only applicable in characteristic 0.
