[For the entire collection see Zbl 0719.00020.] This is a survey paper on minimization of maximum type functions such as \(\Psi(x)=\max\{f_ j(x): j=1,\dots,m\}\) with continuously differentiable \(f_ j: {\mathbf R}^ n\to{\mathbf R}\). Extensions to control problems are also discussed. Several methods to solve such problems are presented. They are based on the principle of steepest descent and can be seen as generalizations of Huard's method of centers. For more details and an in- depth treatment the author refers to one of his previous articles [SIAM Rev. 29, No. 1, 21-89 (1987); M.R. 88e:49063].
