Abstract: For any cofinite Fuchsian group $GammasubsetmPSL(2,mathbbR)$, we show that any set of $N$ points on the hyperbolic surface $$ determines $geq{C}_{Gamma}fracNlogN$ distinct distances for some constant $C_{Gamma}>0$ depending only on $Gamma$. In particular, for $Gamma$ being any finite index subgroup of $mPSL(2,mathbbZ)$ with $mu=[mPSL(2,mathbbZ):Gamma]<infty$, any set of $N$ points on $$ determines $geqCfracNmulogN$ distinct distances for some absolute constant $C>0$.
