Abstract: Let be a group hyperbolic relative to a collection of subgroups . We say that a subgroup is hyperbolically embedded into , if is hyperbolic relative to . In this paper we obtain a characterization of hyperbolically embedded subgroups. In particular, we show that if an element has infinite order and is not conjugate to an element of , , then the (unique) maximal elementary subgroup contained is hyperbolically embedded into . This allows to prove that if is boundedly generated, then is elementary or for some .
