Abstract: The article is devoted to the long-standing problem on the smoothness of sub-Riemannian geodesics. We prove that the derivatives of sub-Riemannian geodesics are always -H"older continuous. This result has a number of interesting implications concerning (i) the Fourier coefficients decay on abnormal controls, (ii) the rate of their approximation by smooth functions, (iii) the corresponding generalization of the Poincare inequality, and (iv) the compact embedding of the set of shortest paths into the space of Bessel potentials.
