Abstract: We give a simplified approach to Kunzinger & Saemann's theory of Lorentzian length spaces in the globally hyperbolic, regularly localizable case; these provide a nonsmooth framework for general relativity. We close a gap in this setting, by showing consistency of two potentially different notions of timelike geodesic segments used in the literature. We propose a nonsmooth reformulation of Penrose' null energy condition in terms of the timelike curvature-dimension conditions of Cavalletti & Mondino (and Braun), and discuss its consistency and stability properties. This yields new insights even in the smooth setting.

From both the mathematical and physical points of view, a nonsmooth theory of gravity which relaxes or replaces the smooth manifolds required by Einstein's relativity appears highly desirable. The relationship between such a theory and Lorentzian geometry is analogous to the relationship of metric or metric measure geometry to the classical theory of smooth Riemannian manifolds. Several key steps in this direction have already been taken. Striking among them are the axiomatization of a theory of Lorentzian length spaces and sectional curvature bounds. In this paper, the author proposes a new nonsmooth null energy-dimension condition, and shows it is consistent with the classical null energy conditions in the setting of smooth globally hyperbolic Lorentzian spacetimes.
