Abstract: A classical problem in constant mean curvature hypersurface theory is, for given Hgeq0, to determine whether a compact submanifold Gamman−1 of codimension two in Euclidean space R+n+1, having a single valued orthogonal projection on Rn, is the boundary of a graph with constant mean curvature H over a domain in Rn. A well known result of Serrin gives a sufficient condition, namely, Gamma is contained in a right cylinder C orthogonal to Rn with inner mean curvature HCgeqH. In this paper, we prove existence and uniqueness if the orthogonal projection Ln−1 of Gamma on Rn has mean curvature HLgeq−H and Gamma is contained in a cone K with basis in Rn enclosing a domain in Rn containing L such that the mean curvature of K satisfies HKgeqH. Our condition reduces to Serrin's when the vertex of the cone is infinite.

The authors deal with a problem in constant mean curvature theory of hypersurfaces in the real \(n\)-dimensional space. The question is under which conditions a compact submanifold of codimension 2 in the Euclidean space with a single-valued orthogonal projection on a hyperplane is a graph with constant mean curvature \(H\). A former result by J. Serrin yields one sufficient condition, namely that it is sufficient to demand the manifold to be contained in a right cylinder orthogonal to the hyperplane, with inner mean curvature greater than \(H\). The authors prove that a similar conclusion holds for a right cone instead of the right cylinder. In the limit case, the cone turns into Serrin's right cylinder.
