Around discontinuity for the Riesz projection in the uniform metric
This article is based on a lecture given by the author at the conference ``Complex Analysis and Related problems in Kazan, Russia, in June 29 -- July 4 of 2022. Glicksberg asked in 1964 whether a closed nonselfadjoint subalgebra \(A\) of \(C(K)\) must be uncomplemented in \(C(K)\), and gave an affirmative answer to this when \(K\) is a compact group and \(A\) is translation invariant. A full proof of the Glicksberg conjecture was obtained by the author of this article [\textit{S.~V. Kislyakov}, Sov. Math., Dokl. 40, No.~3, 584--586 (1990; Zbl 0729.46022); translation from Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR 309, No.~4, 795--798 (1990)]. The article gives a nice overview of the Glicksberg conjecture and the author also presents several new formulations of related results in comparison with those existing in the literature.
