This paper develops an approach for the use of the hysteretic damped tuned mass damper (HD-TMD) to achieve an optimal design in the seismic environment for acceleration response control. The authors note that previous work has concentrated on vibration mitigation in HD-TMD systems without explicit consideration of structural acceleration flow, an area of particular concern in seismic system applications, especially for large earthquakes.\N\NDescribed here are seismic optimizations of HD-TMD for structural acceleration control and effective damping. In particular, the authors carried out \(H_{\infty}\) optimizations for undamped and lightly damped structures. They used fixed point theory and so developed closed form solutions for improved and optimal parameters. They also carried out parametric analysis of the dynamic amplification factors and discovered that the closed form solutions tuned the dynamic amplification factors into doubled peaks, and in so doing reduced the maximum response frequency.\N\NThe proposed optimal solutions for the HD-TMD, tested with an available engineering frictional device, were corroborated using twenty sets of seismic ground motions.
