Dynamics on the SU(2,1)-character variety of the one-holed torus
In this paper, the authors study the character variety \(\mathfrak{X}=\mathrm{Hom}(F_2,\mathrm{SU}(2,1))^*/\mathrm{SU}(2,1)\), where \(F_2\) is the free group on two generators and \(\mathrm{Hom}(F_2,\mathrm{SU}(2,1))^*\) is the set of representations whose orbits for the action by conjugation is closed. To be precise, they give a description of the set \(\mathfrak{X}_{BQ}\) of Bowditch representations in terms of equivalent properties, and prove that it is an open domain of discontinuity for the action by pre-composition of the mapping class group \(\mathcal{MCG}(S_{1,1})\) of the one-holed torus (recal that \(F_2=\pi_1(S_{1,1})\)), and that it contains all the discrete, faithful, convex cocompact representations.\N\NTo do this, the authors use the homotopy classes of loops on \(S_{1,1}\) to define three graphs \(\mathcal{C},\mathcal{T}\) and \(\mathcal{E}\), and use the traces of the images of these loops through the representations to give an orientation on \(\mathcal{E}\). Then, they prove in Section 3 the Fork Lemma, from which they deduce some inequalities that are later used for proving the existence of attracting subgraphs \(T_{\rho}(K)\) for each representation \(\rho\) and a constant \(K\). These subgraphs happen to be finite when \(\rho\) is a Bowditch representation and \(K\) is large enough. In Section 4, they prove that these Bowditch representations have a property called Fibonacci growth, which allows them to characterize \(\mathfrak{X}_{BQ}\) in terms of the attracting subgraphs \(T_{\rho}(K)\). This characterization is finally used to prove main results of the work.
