Cohomology rings of oriented Grassmann manifolds G₂^t, 4
The Grassmann manifold \(G_{n,k}\) is the manifold of all \(k\)-dimensional subspaces of \(\mathbb R ^n\) and the oriented Grassmann manifold \(\tilde G_{n,k}\) is the manifold of all oriented \(k\)-subspaces of \(\mathbb R ^n\). The mod 2 cohomology algebra of \(G_{n,k}\) has been determined by \textit{A. Borel} [Comment. Math. Helv. 27, 165--197 (1953; Zbl 0052.40301)] to be a quotient of the polynomial algebra over the Stiefel-Whitney classes of the canonical vector bundle \(\gamma_{n,k}\). Although there is the double cover \(p: \tilde G_{n,k} \rightarrow G_{n,k}\), the algebra \(H^*(\tilde G_{n,k}; \mathbb Z_2)\) is not determined by the work by Borel. Only \(\mathrm{im } p^* \subset H^*(\tilde G_{n,k}; \mathbb Z_2)\) is known in general.\N\NSeveral authors have contributed to a complete description for \(H^*(\tilde G_{n,2}; \mathbb Z_2)\) and to an almost complete description for \(H^*(\tilde G_{n,3}; \mathbb Z_2)\). In fact for the latter there is still an ambiguity left for \(n=2^t -1\). In particular, most of the works on \(H^*(\tilde G_{n,3}; \mathbb Z_2)\) were published recently in 2024 (cf. [\textit{Á. K. Matszangosz} and \textit{M. Wendt}, Math. Z. 308, No. 1, Paper No. 2, 44 p. (2024; Zbl 1555.57033)]) and the first of the 2024 papers was about \(H^*(\tilde G_{2^t, 3}; \mathbb Z_2)\) (cf. [\textit{U. A. Colović} and \textit{B. I. Prvulović}, Math. Slovaca 74, No. 1, 195--208 (2024; Zbl 1546.55023)]).\N\NThe authors prove that the graded algebra \(H^*(\tilde G_{2^t,4}; \mathbb Z_2)\) is isomorphic to a quotient of the graded algebra \(\mathbb Z_2[w_2, w_3, w_4, a_{2^t - 4}]\) by an ideal, where \(|w_i|= i\), \(i=2, 3, 4\) , \(|a_{2^t - 4}|=2^t - 4\) and \(w_2, w_3, w_4\) respectively correspond by the isomorphism to the Stiefel-Whitney classes \(\tilde w_2, \tilde w_3, \tilde w_4\) of the canonical vector bundle \(\tilde \gamma_{2^t,4}\) over \(\tilde G_{2^t,4}\). In the process, they find a Gröbner basis for the ideal, which is used by them to describe an additive basis for \(H^*(\tilde G_{2^t,4}; \mathbb Z_2)\).
