On the diagonal actions of Z on Z^n
By [\textit{G. C. Hruska} and \textit{D. T. Wise}, Geom. Topol. 13, No. 4, 1945--1988 (2009; Zbl 1188.20042)], the subgroup \(H\) of a finitely generated group \(G\) has bounded packing in \(G\) if given \(r>0\) one can find an integer \(N\) such that for any \(N\) distinct left cosets \(\{ g_1H,\ldots, g_NH\}\) of \(H\) in \(G\) there is a pair \(g_iH, g_jH\) which is separated by distance at least \(r\), i.e. \(d(g_iH, g_jH)\geq r\). Here, \(d\) is the word metric on \(G\) corresponding to a finite generating set of the group. Hruska and Wise [loc. cit.] asked the question whether every subgroup of a virtually polycyclic group has bounded packing. \par The natural place to investigate this question from a geometric viewpoint is in the simplest non-abelian examples of polycyclic groups, namely the extensions of \({\mathbb Z}^n\) by \(\mathbb Z\). In the paper under review, the author analyzes the dynamics of the diagonal actions of \(\mathbb Z\) on \({\mathbb Z}^n\). \N\NThe first main result of the paper is that when \(\mathbb Z\) acts on \({\mathbb Z}^n\) via a diagonalizable automorphism \(\phi\in\text{Aut}({\mathbb Z}^n)\) with real eigenvalues, then every subgroup of \({\mathbb Z}^n\rtimes_{\phi}\mathbb Z\) has bounded packing. \par Then the author introduces the notion of coset growth for the coset space \(G/H\) and shows that if \(f_H(r)\) is the coset growth of \(H = \langle t\rangle\) in \({\mathbb Z}^2\rtimes_{\phi}\mathbb Z\), where \(\phi\) is a hyperbolic automorphism of \({\mathbb Z}^2\), then \(f_H(r) \prec\alpha^r\). \N\NAs the author mentions, the question on bounded packing in polycyclic groups was settled in its entirety by \textit{W.-Y. Yang} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 139, No. 9, 3217--3218 (2011; Zbl 1230.20043)] as a straightforward corollary of Malcev's theorem on the subgroup separability of polycyclic groups. The results of the paper under review were posted in [\textit{J. Sahattchieve}, ``On bounded packing in polycyclic groups, Preprint, \url{arXiv:1011.5953}] shortly after the work of Yang [loc. cit.]. The author of the present paper do not use Malcev's result and his approach allows to obtain the coset growth estimate for \({\mathbb Z}^2\rtimes_{\phi}\mathbb Z\).
