The paper under review contributes to a central question in transformation group theory and algebraic topology: which finite groups admit free actions on products of spheres, and under what dimensional constraints? This problem dates back to seminal works by Smith, Swan, Milnor, Madsen-Thomas-Wall, and others. While the existence problem has been settled when the dimensions are allowed to vary freely, the challenge remains to understand constraints when the number or nature of the spheres is fixed, particularly in the case of products of two spheres.\N\NThe authors focus on the alternating group \(A_4\) and the compact Lie group \(SO(3)\), which share closely related mod-2 cohomology rings via invariant theory. They classify all parameter ideals in \(H^*(BA_4; \mathbb{F}_2)\) and in the Dickson algebra \(D(2) = H^*(BSO(3); \mathbb{F}_2)\) that are closed under Steenrod operations and are generated by two homogeneous elements. These ideals, called \emph{Steenrod closed parameter ideals}, play a key role in determining possible free actions on finite CW-complexes homotopy equivalent to \(S^n \times S^m\), due to the fact that such actions induce classifying maps whose kernel must be a Steenrod closed ideal with finite quotient.\N\NThe classification achieved in this paper is comprehensive and is structured into three distinct types of ideals:\N\begin{itemize}\N\item[1.] \textbf{Fibered ideals}, of the form \(\langle v^k, u^\ell \rangle\), where the degrees satisfy a specific divisibility constraint related to powers of two. These extend earlier results by \textit{D. M. Meyer} and \textit{L. Smith} [Fundam. Math. 177, No. 3, 241--250 (2003; Zbl 1032.55018)].\N\item[2.] \textbf{Twisted ideals}, which are generated by a pair \(\langle x, \mathrm{Sq}^1(x) \rangle\), where \(x\) is constructed recursively. This structure generalizes a key construction used by \textit{R. Oliver} [Lect. Notes Math. 763, 539--548 (1979; Zbl 0417.57020)] to prove that \(A_4\) cannot act freely on a space with the mod-2 cohomology of \(S^n \times S^n\).\N\item[3.] \textbf{Mixed ideals}, which are more subtle combinations involving powers of generators in twisted ideals and their successors, and whose realizability as kernels of actual group actions remains open.\N\end{itemize}\N\NThe main results (Theorems 1.2, 1.3, and 1.4) lead to the significant conclusion that the possible dimension pairs \((n, m)\) for which a finite free \(A_4\)-action exists on a CW-complex homotopy equivalent to \(S^n \times S^m\) are extremely rare. More precisely, the density of such pairs tends to zero as \(n,m \to \infty\). This vastly strengthens previous partial obstructions from Euler characteristic and cohomological dimension arguments.\N\NIn addition, the authors prove that the restriction map from \(H^*(BA_4)\) to the Dickson algebra induces a bijection on Steenrod closed parameter ideals (Corollary 6.18). This transfers the classification from \(A_4\) to \(SO(3)\), shedding light on the topological complexity of both discrete and Lie group actions.\N\NFrom a methodological standpoint, the paper blends techniques from:\N\begin{itemize}\N\item Modular invariant theory: The mod-2 cohomology rings involved are invariant rings of polynomial algebras under finite group actions.\N\item Steenrod algebra and its operations: The closure under Steenrod squares, especially \(\mathrm{Sq}^1\), is pivotal in constructing and classifying ideals.\N\item Commutative algebra: The authors make essential use of the Cohen-Macaulay property, regular sequences, and unique factorization to control the structure of ideals.\N\item Homotopy theory: The broader context of the work is the study of group actions on topological spaces, and the connection between cohomological invariants and geometric realizability is carefully developed.\N\end{itemize}\N\NThe paper also raises natural and significant open questions. For instance, it is unknown whether all fibered or mixed ideals can be realized as the kernel of classifying maps for actual free actions. The realization problem for twisted ideals is understood, but the mixed case remains mysterious.\N\NOverall, this is a technically deep and conceptually rich paper. It provides a precise and elegant solution to a classification problem with direct implications for group actions on topological spaces. It will be of interest to researchers in algebraic topology, group cohomology, and transformation groups.
