The cohomology of motivic \(A\)(2)

Abstract: Working over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero, we compute the cohomology of the subalgebra A(2) of the motivic Steenrod algebra that is generated by Sq^1, Sq^2, and Sq^4. The method of calculation is a motivic version of the May spectral sequence. Speculatively assuming that there is a "motivic modular forms" spectrum with certain properties, we use an Adams-Novikov spectral sequence to compute the homotopy of such a spectrum at the prime 2.

This paper calculates the cohomology of the subalgebra \(A(2)\) of the motivic \({\mathbb F}_2\)-Steenrod algebra, using a motivic May spectral sequence. Just as the cohomology of the analogous subalgebra \(A(2)\) of the classical Steenrod algebra is the \(E_2\)-term of a spectral sequence converging to the homotopy of \(\mathit{tmf}\) at the prime \(2\), so this motivic analogue leads to the homotopy of the conjectural motivic modular form spectrum \(\mathit{mmf}\). And just as there are better ways of calculating the homotopy of \(\mathit{tmf}\), so the analogous methods can be used for \(\mathit{mmf}\) and the paper gives such a calculation, describing what the homotopy of \(\mathit{mmf}\) would be at the prime \(2\).
