Quantum ergodicity

From MaRDI portal

The author deals with quantum mechanical systems with ergodic classical counterparts from physical (quantum chaos) and geometric (arithmetic quantum chaos) points of view. The notion of ``quantum ergodicity is embodied in Shnirelman's theorem on ergodic properties of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian on a compact Riemannian manifold. The author introduces the notion of ergodicity at infinite energy level in both quantum and classical mechanics. It allows to give a necessary and sufficient condition in terms of microlocal properties of eigenfunctions of a quantized Hamiltonian, such that the corresponding classical dynamical system is ergodic. A new insight into quantum ergodicity due to Shnirelman, Zelditch and Colin de Verdière is given. For the entire collection see [Zbl 0874.00038].
